GAME DESIGN

This is a collection of designs and ideas for possible future projects that I have worked on in my free time. These projects focus on the design rather than the functionality of a working model. I absolutely love developing new ideas and creating characters, stories and worlds.

HEARTHSTONE CARD: SILAS DARKMOON

December 2017

Throughout the ten years that I played World of Warcraft there was always one event I looked forward to every month, the Darkmoon Faire. The fair, filled with colorful banners and friendly residents, open their gates to both Horde and Alliance, welcoming guests to participate in the exciting games and events throughout the week. However, this seemingly cheerful environment evokes an unsettling essence when the island is explored further. Throughout the island there are ghosts who tell the tales of their pasts, mentioning the positive impacts Silas Darkmoon and the fair had on their lives. However, none of the ghosts say how they died. This had led to the speculation that Silas Darkmoon was the one who actually killed them. These interactions are quite mysterious and only adds to our curiosity of what really happens on the island when we aren’t there and what kind of person Silas Darkmoon truly is.

This card is designed around the idea that Silas Darkmoon is a mischievous ringleader who uses the Darkmoon Faire to disguise his mysterious agenda. This includes killing the residents of the fair whose ghosts wander throughout the island. Silas Darkmoon is small in stature, lacking brawn and constitution, making his health and attack weaker than the average human. To mimic his actions of killing the Darkmoon residents, after each turn, the player will kill one of his friendly minions and bring them back to life as a Ghost. Ghosts are considered a different tribe than minions and therefore Silas cannot kill them. This means each card can only be killed and become a Ghost one time. He was added to the priest deck due to his ability to “resurrect” his friendly minions. While this is not a standard resurrect, due to the fact that he is the one killing the minion, he is also the one bringing it back to life. This means that a minion with low health could be killed and summoned as a Ghost, restoring the card back to full life. This mechanic would synergize well with a Deathrattle Deck as this would proc the Deathrattle effect twice per card. The addition of this card would change the strategy of the match, turning the enemy’s focus towards killing the Deathrattle cards and activating the proc once rather than possibly twice. However, this card does have weaker stats which means the player must be careful and protect Silas with other Taunt cards. The addition of Silas Darkmoon would allow for new possibilities during play and bring change to an older deck.
